The Solent Rivals Map
by Richard Smith 2008
This is the first RR map I've designed for a long time, only my
third ever, and the first I did electronically. I used Paint Shop Pro 5 (old version) to draw the map. I used
its layers facility to have a semi-transparent road map of the area visible to ensure accuracy. I also looked at
the real railways and ferries for info. Thanks to Brendan Whyte, Tony Robbins and Jim Reader for their helpful feedback
which enabled me to improve the map greatly. It has been playtested F2F and was a success, but really does need 4 players,
no more, no less for a balanced game.
The first two files are the complete map and should print OK in A4 or A3.
If you have an A4 printer you can make an A3 map by printing the west and east maps and gluing them together (they overlap).
If you have an A3 printer you can do the same to make an A2 map.

Notes:
The map says "Ferries are exclusive unless bought on the same postal turn" and "may use own ferry or rivals known ferry in build phase".
After discussion it was agreed that...
1) Ferries are shared only if they are bought exactly simultaneously
2) If two players order the building of the same ferry in the same postal turn, but player 1 gets there first, player 2 pays the 3 toll and possible parallel building costs on the other side.
Note that there are no conditional orders such as "if player 3 builds the Hythe Ferry" - you can only order to use a player's known ferry (built on earlier postal turn) or attempt to build a ferry yourself and pay if beaten to it (as per 2).
Note that during the build phase the start and end terminals are treated as adjacent.
So with a roll of 5 starting from Southampton you could do:
(Southampton) - J10 - K10 - K11 [build Soton to Cowes ferry] - T27 - COWES
(net cost: 0 - pay 6 to build ferry and gain 6 for connecting Cowes)
When racing you have to count all the squares plus play 1 to embark and 1 to disembark.
